Stefan waited patiently next to his brothers countless bottles of alcohol. He had texted Caroline a while ago and was excited to be seeing her. It had been a while since just the two of them had been able to sit down and talk one on one and he definitely had missed the old times with her. After Damon had rape fed on her, and she was turned by Katherine, he had helped her through her transition and he was glad that they had a common bond. He listened closely as the front door opened and he heard her light foot steps approach.

Caroline had been kind of AWOL lately. She had spent a lot of her time by herself in her room, not really wanting to talk to anyone. Earlier that morning, Stefan had text her asking if she wanted to hang out. She didn’t want to at first, it was easier to just stay away from everybody. But Stefan had been the one to help her when she first became a vampire, and maybe he had been in situations like this too. She had decided to go see him. No harm could come of it. She drove to the Salvatore house quickly and made her way into the house without knocking. He’d be able to hear her anyway. “Stefan?” she called, not sure where he was in the large house.

Klaus nodded at her and ordered them both chicken parmigiana and a nice bottle of red wine to go along with it and sent the waiter off. When she asked about his day, he almost laughed. He didn’t. He had more class than that. Klaus looked at her and put his hand on the table, folded, as he spoke. “It was alright. I spent a lot of time restoring the damage that Kol inflicted on my house because he could.” he said, rolling his eyes. “He’s very…dramatic. If you think I am bad…” he said, shaking his head and chuckling. Nik thanked the waiter when he brought salad over and put a bowl of french onion soup in front of both of them. “I know it’s not italian, but oddly enough they have the best french onion soup at this place.” he said smiling at her. He picked up his wine glass and raised it up to her. “…a toast. To how lovely you look tonight.”

Caroline laughed and nodded. “I didn’t get to meet Kol,” she told him. “I don’t doubt he’s as bad as you say.” The Original family all seemed to have a bit of a temper. Apart from Elijah. He was the exception to most of the Original’s ways. She held her glass up and touched it to Klaus’. She brought it to her lips and took a small sip before setting it down again. “Thanks,” she said. “You don’t look so bad yourself.” She grabbed her spoon and tasted the soup. “It is good,” she agreed. “Is there any specific reason you brought me out tonight?” she asked, twirling a lock of her hair absent-mindedly.

…No. I just assumed my brother had bought you more clothes you can suffocate in.

I don’t think it’s any of your business.

Mm. I’m sure it isn’t, but if I was a polite person, this would be a completely different conversation.

Whatever. Maybe you should work on being polite?

Klaus smiled back at Caroline as she came out. She looked radiant. Confident. She was definitely born to be a ruler. She wasn’t meant to fall into anyone’s shadow. He intended to make her see that. Holding out his arm, he wrapped hers around it and then escorted her outside to where his car was sitting. He thought about driving the Porsche over, just because it was fancier…but he wasn’t sure that was something that she would like. So instead, he had driven his Charger over. Black outside and inside, leather and tinted windows, and all the best things money could buy. Plus, it had a roomier backseat. Not that he intended on trying it out with her. At least not that night. He opened the door for her like a gentleman and then quickly got in himself, smiling at her as he took her hand and kissed the back of it. “Thank you for allowing me to take you out this evening,” he said. Very formal. He smiled at her and then he started driving. Before long, they were outside of Williamsburg and parked in front of a really expensive, really fancy looking Italian restaurant. Opening her door for her again, Klaus once more took her arm through his as he led her up and into the restaurant. “Can I get you anything? Feel free to order whatever you like,” he said with a smile. “Tonight is all about you snapping your fingers, and getting whatever it is you want.”

The restaurant was beautiful and Caroline was immediately impressed. No guy had ever taken her somewhere like this before. No guy was ever as interested in her as Klaus was right now. It was new and exciting and Caroline liked it. Caroline would never admit any of this, though, and tried to keep her expression neutral as she took in her surroundings. “Not bad,” she said as he walked her in. “I don’t want to do that, though,” she told him. “I’ll have whatever you’re having.” She examined her hands, trying to think of something she could say. “How was your day?” she asked, keeping the conversation casual. She was sure it would become serious soon enough and she wanted to enjoy the small talk.

Lovely. We’re so glad you could join us, Caroline. Did you buy your own clothes tonight?

Why? Do you like it?

“If you knew what it was, you wouldn’t have had to ask about why our hair is different,” Katherine said with a roll of her eyes. She thought it was pretty obvious, but maybe not. “Maybe if you keep telling yourself that, you’ll believe it. I, however, don’t buy it.”

“I thought it might’ve been something else. Not just a styling choice,” she said, getting annoyed. “I don’t need you to buy it. I don’t need anyone to buy it. I just need everyone to back off and stop making assumptions about what’s going on. Nobody knows anything.”

the-niklaus:

Although she shut the door in his face, Klaus still smiled. It took him half a second to go out to his Porsche and come back inside. He knocked on Caroline’s door gently. He had another box wrapped with another pretty bow. It was true, one couldn’t buy affection. However, that wasn’t what Nik was trying to do. He just wanted to give her…everything. He wanted to buy her everything she wanted and then give her the world on top of that. “If you don’t mind…I thought of that,” he said, knowing again that she could hear him just fine. “I brought another dress…I was hoping you’d consider wearing.” Klaus looked down and ran his fingers over the top thinking about the dress. She looked astonishing in blue, he already knew that. That had been the reason he’d gone for the dress. The black lace overlay just added to it…and he hoped that she would accept it. He wanted to see her wear something he’d picked out for her….because she wanted to. Not because she felt like there hadn’t been another option like she had said at the ball. Looking up, Nik straightened himself up and held out the box, standing there hoping that Caroline would open the door and at least look at it. “I really hope you’ll like it,” he added through the door.

She was already combing through her closet when she heard him speak outside her door. She cracked it open and looked at him curiously, her gaze traveling down to the package he held. She reached out and took it from him, flashing him a smile before closing the door in his face again. “This saves me a lot of time!” she called to him, opening the box. She smiled, it reminded her of the dress he had given her for the ball. She shed her clothes quickly and put the dress on. Caroline stood in front of the mirror, admiring the way it showed off all her best features. She quickly fixed her hair and did her makeup, a skill she was proud of. She didn’t know anybody who could get ready faster than her in the morning and look as good as she did. She pulled on a pair of black heels and grabbed her purse. She opened her door and smiled at Klaus. “Ready to go,” she said, stepping into the hallway.
